The recorded history of the Fremont area began in 1797, when Mission San Jose was founded by the Spaniards. The Mission was established at the site of the Ohlone (pronounced Oh-loan'-ee)  village, near the current Ohlone Community College.
 
The Mission prospered, and soon, during the time of the California Gold rush, the Fremont area grew rapidly and the nearby town of Mission San Jose grew up around the old mission, even having own which still exists today.

John C. Fremont, the town's namesake, mapped a trail through Mission Pass to provide access for more settlers into the area.

Did you know the Fremont area was the very first Hollywood? From 1912 to 1916 the Niles section of Fremont was the earliest home of California's motion picture industry. Charlie Chaplin filmed several movies there, his most famous "The Tramp".
 
You can explore antique stores that provide a view into the past of a booming farm era and Charlie Chaplin's first movie years.Today, the Historic Niles district still maintains the flair of the past. Small restaurants invite to enjoy organic food as well as all American and international cuisine and there is a newly opened Niles town plaza in Niles downtown.
 
Fremont enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate, typical of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The hills around Fremont offer hiking trails and breathtaking views of the Bay Area. On clear days the skyline of the City of San Jose and San Francisco can be admired. Fremont's Central Park encourages all kind of activities, from sailing to walking, from a barbeque with friends to stopping at the play ground, or even a splash into the newly built water park. East Bay Regional Parks  has a lot of recreation options you will enjoy.
